Hereโs Everything Disney Just Announced During Massive Investor Day Presentation
Disney rolled a lifetimeโs worth of announcements at its massive investor day on Thursday, providing updates on dozens of films and series as well as unveiling new projects from Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, Disney Animation and more.
From a new โSister Actโ sequel coming to Disney+ to a slew of new โStar Warsโ series currently in the works, here is everything the company just announced all in one place:
When Disney launched its streaming service a year ago, the company estimated it would attract 60-90 million subscribers by 2024. On Thursday, it was announced that the streaming service has blown past that mark to 86.8 million subs in the first year alone. Unfortunately for those 87 million, the monthly price will go up to around ยฃ7.99 next year.


โRayaโ gets the Premier Access Treatment
Following in the footsteps of Disneyโs โMulanโ remake, the upcoming โRaya and the Last Dragonโ will open as a Premier Access release next March, with subscribers given the chance to purchase streaming access of the film the same day it is released in theaters.
SEC football moves to ESPN
After nearly three decades on CBS, Southeastern Conference college football games will air on ESPN and ABC starting in 2024 as Disney locks in a 10-year TV rights deal.
Noah Hawleyโs โAlienโ
โFargoโ mastermind Noah Hawley is in development on a new series set within the Ridley Scottโs โAlienโ franchise for FX. The project will be set on Earth and is said to blend the thriller aspects of the original 1979 film with James Cameronโs more action-oriented sequel.
โAlways Sunny,โ indeed
FXโs long-running comedy โItโs Always Sunny in Philadelphiaโ was picked up for four more seasons, which will see it surpass โOzzie and Harrietโsโ record as the longest-running sitcom in TV history.
โThe Handmaidโs Taleโ renewed for Season 5
Huluโs Emmy-winning โThe Handmaidโs Taleโ has been picked up for a fifth season starring Elisabeth Moss, with the pandemic-delayed fourth season set to finally air next year.


A slew of new โStar Warsโ series
Following the success of โThe Mandalorian,โ Disney+ is going all-in on โStar Warsโ with 10 new series set to roll out on the streamer in the coming years. Among the projects in the pipeline are two direct โMandalorianโ spinoffs from director Jon Favreau, a Lando Calrissian series from โDear White Peopleโ creator Justin Simien, a โRogue Oneโ spinoff centered on Diego Lunaโs character called โAndor,โ the mystery-thriller โAcolyteโ from creator Leslye Headland, a series of anime-style short films, and finally the Obi-Wan Kenobi prequel which will see Ewan McGregor reprise his role from the prequel films (along with another โStar Warsโ veteran, Hayden Christensen).
Patty Jenkins enters the โStar Warsโ universe
โWonder Womanโ director Patty Jenkins will helm a new original film in the โStar Warsโ universe titled โRogue Squadron,โ with a theatrical release set for Christmas 2023. Jenkins later said on Twitter that she was inspired to take on the project of what will be โthe greatest fighter pilot movie of all timeโ because of her own experience as the daughter of a fighter pilot in the military.


โGeniusโ moves to Disney+
Nat Geoโs scripted anthology series โGeniusโ will move to Disney+ for its upcoming fourth installment, which was announced Thursday to explore the life of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. It will be one of several original Nat Geo-branded series to roll out on the streamer, alongside the Chris Hemsworth unscripted series โLimitlessโ and two series from director Darren Aronofsky.
Hulu is getting in the Kardashian business
With E!โs long-running โKeeping Up With the Kardashiansโ set to come to an end in 2021, reality TVโs royal family is jumping to Hulu with a new multi-year content deal at the streamer. No specific projects were announced, though new content produced under the deal is expected to start rolling out late next year.
Gabrielle Union to star in โCheaper by the Dozenโ
โBlack-ishโ creator Kenya Barris is in development on a reboot of the โCheaper by the Dozenโ films, with Gabrielle Union set to star. The story centers on a blended family of 12, navigating a hectic home life and their family business, and is slated for a 2022 premiere on Disney+.
John Mulaney and Andy Samberg are โChip โnโ Daleโ
Akiva Schafferโs forthcoming โChip โnโ Dale: Rescue Rangers,โ a hybrid-live-action-animated feature that will debut on Disney+, will feature the voices of John Mulaney and Andy Samberg as the titular chipmunks, with Seth Rogen set to make a cameo.
โPinocchio,โ โPeter Pan & Wendy,โ โDisenchantedโ and more head to Disney+
Disney is moving some of its latest live-action remakes and sequels to Disney+, including โPinocchioโ starring Tom Hanks and directed by Robert Zemeckis and โPeter Pan & Wendyโ starring Yara Shahidi as Tinker Bell. Other features that will debut as Disney+ originals include โSister Act 3,โ a new โDiary of a Wimpy Kidโ film and โDisenchantedโ โ the sequel to โEnchanted,โ for which Amy Adams has been announced to return.
โEncantoโ
The filmed version of Lin-Manuel Mirandaโs โHamiltonโ was a huge boon for Disney+ earlier this summer, so naturally the streamer is re-teaming with the โMoanaโ songwriter on a new original musical set in Colombia. โEncanto,โ directed by Byron Howard and Jared Bush, centers on a โmagical family who live in a magical home.โ
โBaymax!,โ โTiana,โ โMoana: The Seriesโ and โZootopia+โ
Disney is leaving no IP unturned as it expands its streaming offerings. On Thursday, Disney Animation announced five new original series, including spinoffs of big-screen hits โBig Hero 6,โ โMoana,โ โPrincess and the Frogโ and โZootopia.โ The division will also produce the new series โIwรกjรบ,โ a collaboration with the Pan-African entertainment company Kugali set for a 2022 premiere on Disney+.
New Pixar series, too
Disney+ will also get new โUpโ and โCarsโ spinoff series, with the first, โDug Days,โ set to premiere next fall. Pixarโs third series for the platform will be a new โRashomonโ-style series called โWin or Lose,โ which will premiere in fall of 2023.


Buzz Lightyearโs origin story
Following his departure from the Marvel fold, Captain America himself, Chris Evans, will stay in the Disney family as the new voice of one of Pixarโs most iconic characters, Buzz Lightyear. The new film from director Angus MacLane will showcase the space rangerโs heroic origins, with Evans taking over the voice role from โToy Storyโ star Tim Allen.


The MCU finally lands at Disney+
Disney+ has long been planned to play an integral role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the first projects will finally start to roll out next year. On Thursday, the company released new trailers for upcoming series โWandaVision,โ โThe Falcon and the Winter Soldier,โ โLokiโ and the animated โWhat Ifโฆโ Marvel also released a new featurette about the upcoming โMs. Marvelโ series centered around its young star, Iman Vellani.
But โBlack Widowโ is sticking with theaters
Despite Disney moving some of its upcoming films to streaming, Marvelโs latest tentpole, โBlack Widow,โ is holding firm with a planned theatrical release set for May 2021, signaling that Disney+ isnโt looking to become HBO Max just yet.
Even more Marvel series in the works
In addition to the five series mentioned above, Marvel boss Kevin Feige also gave updates on previously announced Disney+ series โ โMoon Knight,โ โHawkeyeโ and โShe-Hulkโ โ as well as a handful of new projects. Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn will return for โSecret Invasion,โ while Don Cheadle is back in โArmor Wars.โ Dominique Thorne will star in โIronheart,โ which focuses on Riri Williams, a young Black woman who takes over the mantle of Iron Man.
โBlack Pantherโ wonโt be recast
In the wake of Chadwick Bosemanโs death earlier this year, Marvel boss Kevin Feige promised that the character of TโChalla would not be recast in the upcoming โBlack Pantherโ sequel. Instead, the film, due out in 2022, will continue to explore โthe world of Wakanda and the rich characters introduced in the first film.โ
The Fantastic 4 join the MCU
Despite two previous failed attempts at launching a film series, the Fantastic 4 are getting yet another shot at the big screen, with โSpider-Manโ director Jon Watts to helm a new movie featuring the classic superhero family for Phase 4 of the MCU.
